Defining Your Career Path on Your Own Terms Defining Your Career Path on Your Own Terms Well, that’s exactly what entrepreneur Brenton Hayden did when he not only set a goal to retire by age 27, but he accomplished this. According to his bylined story on Yahoo! Finance, at age 21, Hayden set a retirement savings goal of $7 million and a retirement age of 27. And just months past his 27th birthday, he transitioned into retirement with a net worth of just under $20 million. Now, to many, this may sound crazy to even consider retiring so early. Hayden agreed, writing: You can imagine that telling people youre planning to retire after less than a decade of work can get you some disapproving looks. I probably couldnt sound lazier if I tried. He went on to say that all too often people associate retirement with trading in work for rest and relaxation, yet he refused to have that “all or nothing” mindset. Retirement for him could mean traveling to Peru one week and then working on media tours for his company the next week, he said. And I wholeheartedly agree with him. Hayden not only defined retirement on his own terms, but his career path as well. Although people may have deemed the notion of retiring before age 30 “lazy” Hayden did not. He decided to come up with his very own definition of retirement- one suitable for him and his goals. And he did the same thing with his career choices. I researched Hayden a little further and it turns out that he is the CEO and founder of Renter’s Warehouse, a very successful property management company with locations throughout the U.S. After high school, unlike the traditional route, Hayden did not attend college. In fact, his only educational experiences listed are one-month entrepreneurship and real estate management programs from Harvard Business School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management. He started working as a sales rep at Kellogg right out of high school and quickly worked his way up to territory manager. After losing his job to downsizing, the then 19-year-old Hayden switched to real estate, working for a man he deemed “the top real estate guy in town.” It was during this time that Hayden caught the entrepreneurial bug as he watched the man successfully grow his business. It wasn’t long before Hayden ventured out on his own to open Renters Warehouse. And he even dabbled in other entrepreneurial endeavors like limousine companies, restaurants, dotcom companies and HVAC companies. He was also a radio host and producer. Hayden has accomplished so many things in such a short time in his career and it is all because he made the decision to go against the grain. I wonder what would happen if more people followed his lead? So often we are taught that there are only “acceptable” paths to take in life. One must graduate high school and go to college to be successful. You have to work 40+ years to be able to retire. Most new businesses fail so the better, more secure route is to work for someone else instead of becoming an entrepreneur. To choose a path that deviates away from the norm is often considered risky, deemed a future failure and/or lazy, as in Hayden’s case. But each person is different, so what works for one person may not be the best option for the next. To be truly successful, you must define your career path on your own terms instead of following the status quo. And if that means setting yourself up to where you can retire before the age of 30, by all means, take that route.

Your very first thought is a twinge of jealousy: “Brian’s been promoted. I wanted that role.” From there, you may start to walk down a negative path. You feel like sulking. Brian is no longer a likable, competent colleague, but clearly, a conniving brown-noser. You might as well stop working so hard, since it’s going unnoticed anyhow. Sound familiar? Regardless of the specifics, odds are you’ve experienced workplace envy. (Everyone does at some point.) But, successful people don't become a green-eyed Grinch of a co-worker, and instead use the feeling to fuel their growth. You can, too. Start by asking yourself these four questions: 1. Do I Really Want What He Has? Margaret landed the promotion you wanted, and you’re really upset she got it instead of you. But, on second thought, do you really want the responsibilities of a manager- including the additional meetings and time spent supervising others, as opposed to working on your own projects? If you drill into what you’re feeling, you may discover you don’t actually want the thing that triggered envy (a.k.a., the promotion). However, it can help you realize what you are looking for. Meaning: While you didn’t want the added responsibility of being project leader, you do want to be considered for new opportunities and be recognized and valued for your hard work. Take the time to get clear about what you’re really aiming for, and spend your energy working toward that goal. 2. What Changes Can I Make? Once you’ve had time to figure out what you want more of in your professional life (more responsibility, more recognition, more leadership opportunities), focus on steps you can take right away to move in that direction. Start with small steps like volunteering for different kinds of projects, speaking up when you have ideas, or signing up for a class to build out a new skill. It may be that you feel a bigger step is necessary. If you realize that every leader at your organization has an MBA, look into local programs- and see if your company has any resources for tuition reimbursement. Taking any step toward your desired goal- whether it’s a baby step or a giant one- will move you out of envy and into a more positive mindset. If you stop dwelling and start doing, your focus and drive will return, and so will your more rational, sociable self. 3. What Does My Team Think? Once you have a sense of what you’d like to accomplish, conduct your own informal 360 review with your boss, your peers, and your direct reports. They can help you identify both your strengths and your blind spots. Ask questions like: “How do I add value?” “What do you want more of from me?” “What do you want less of?” “What new skills could I learn that would benefit the team?” Listen for the areas where you need to grow and then thank people for sharing their thoughts with you. These conversations will also give you more ideas for changes you could make to qualify for new opportunities. 4. Who Can Help Me Improve? Top performers work to recognize- and then eliminate- their weaknesses. If you learn others think you’re not handling conflict or holding others accountable, you have a starting point. From there, identify someone who excels at these skills and ask him or her to coach you. It could be a boss, co-worker, or mentor. Lacking technical skills? Find an expert who can teach you- or a class you can take. Need to work on your presentations? Seek out a coach to help you with your public speaking. Everyone has blind spots. To achieve your career goal, work on those areas for improvement. Paying attention to your emotions will, if channeled correctly, guide you in your personal growth. So the next time you feel envy, use that feeling to help you get clear on how you want to grow professionally and personally, and then take action. Turns out, some of the “great” things you’re doing might actually be hindering your performance- and your boss’s opinion of you. Thoroughly Explain Why Something Went WrongWhen something goes wrong, it’s not exactly second nature to step up to the plate and whole-heartedly accept the blame. Instead, you want to make sure that your boss understands exactly why you weren’t able to meet your deadline or finish the monthly numbers. Whether your co-workers have been f looding you with questions, you couldn’t get someone in the marketing department to return your call, or no one would show you how to do a V-lookup, there was just no way for you to meet that impossible deadline. And of course you feel compelled to clearly explain your hold-up.What Your Boss ThinksAn excuse is an excuse, no matter how valid it may be. But at the end of the day, the work didn’t get done, and that’s what your boss cares about. Sure, things go wrong- even managers expect that. But when it comes to explaining why, your boss doesn’t need to know anything besides the basics- and certainly doesn’t want to hear you place the blame on someone else.If you really want to impress him, admit to the mistake and explain how you’re going to move forward: “I want to apologize for missing the deadline this week for the call-handling report- I should have prioritized my time better. This week, I’m setting daily checkpoints in my calendar so this doesn’t happen again. ”If you offer up a plan of action, rather than an excuse, you’ll instantly gain your manager’s respect. And if you actually follow that plan, well- you’ll completely blow him away.2. Provide Constant UpdatesWhen you’re working on a big project or dealing with an uber-important customer, your first instinct is to let your boss know any and every detail that develops throughout the day to make sure you’re on the path to success. You want your boss to know that you’re taking care of business- and give him ample opportunities to re-route you if you veer off track.What Your Boss ThinksWhile your boss needs to be aware of what you’re working on and any issues you’re having, he doesn’t need to know every tiny detail of your progress- because ideally, he trusts you to take charge and make decisions. Your success is important to him- but keep in mind, he also has work that needs to get done, and it gets harder for him to focus when you pop in the door every half hour to s ay, “Hey, I wanted to let you know that I just got an email from my client and he wants an update on my progress, so we scheduled a phone call for this afternoon.”Yes, it’s important that you keep your manager apprised of your progress and ask pressing questions that require an immediate answer (after all, it is a manager’s job to guide and, well, manage you), but it’s equally important to strike a constructive balance. Urgent questions are one thing- but to report your ongoing progress, try setting up a weekly face-to-face check-in to discuss what you’ve done and how you can move forward. And, don’t rely solely on him- challenge yourself to seek out other resources within the company who can answer your questions.3. Fake Your ApprovalWhen your boss proudly presents his latest and greatest (albeit ridiculous and completely impractical) idea for your department, who would argue? Let’s be honest: It’s incredibly intimidating to be the lone dissenter in the room, and it’s easy to assume that unless you go with whatever he says, you’re going to face some unpleasant consequences (read: No raise for you!).What Your Boss ThinksWhile it’s likely that your boss truly believes in his ideas, he doesn’t want you to just sit back and accept them without a word. Your Time May Have Just Begun Over 50? Your Time May Have Just Begun You were born in a time of prosperity amid a heightened fear of nuclear war. You came of age in the turbulent 60s and the disco era of the 1970s, before you began to mature in the economic boom of the 1980s. Along came the onslaught of the Information Age, which dramatically changed the work world (and maybe cost you a job) and placed you in a technological backseat to your younger Generation X and Millennial peers. Youre a Baby Boomer, and unless youre on the cusp of retirement and biding your time until you can file for Social Security, youre probably restless and believe you have a lot to contribute to society before you decide to hang it up and hit the golf course or travel. On the other hand, do you feel youre in the twilight of your career? That every job search might take longer than expected because employers are looking for someone younger and more technologically savvy who wont command as much in salary as you would? Chin up, bunky! There may still be plenty of opportunities to make a difference before you walk off into the sunset even if you want to change careers. While its true you could be beyond your peak earning years, youre probably also beyond your peak spending years. So now is a good time to think of what would make you feel happy and fulfilled. For instance: If youre an executive, have you reached your leadership peak? Is it time to pursue that C-level position youve coveted? Or is it time to de-stress your life and take a step down the ladder? If you have a passion for teaching, but not the money that usually came with it as you were raising a family, would a late-career switch to the classroom help you fulfill that passion, assuming there are fewer financial pressures now? Have you ever entertained the thought of giving back to your community by taking on a key role with a nonprofit? Unemployed and finding it tough to find a new job? Consider contract work. It could lead to a full-time role, but many companies foresee a skills gap even a temporary one that could open short-term contract opportunities. You may find the uncertainty a bit unnerving, but if you dont like the 9-to-5, 5-day-a-week routine every week, being a hired gun is a plausible option. But with the Baby Boomers inching toward retirement, it will become increasingly important for companies to hang onto key talent. Dont be surprised, then, if your current employer creates incentives for you to stay, such as monetary bonuses, extra personal time off, or even higher employer matches for your 401(k). You just might be able to have some control over your work destiny before you decide to pack it in.
