Words And Phrases You Shouldnt Use If You Want To Sound Smart

Words And Phrases You Shouldnt Use If You Want To Sound Smart The way we communicate with others reveals a lot about us, and in a work setting, its important to be mindful of our choice of words and phrases to ensure we are perceived as being smart. After all, we work really hard. Who wants to throw all that away by sounding dumb? Here are some words and phrases you should take care to use properly.1. I could care less. I know there are times when you really dont care, but the correct use is I couldnt care less.2. I should of. Regardless of the fact that we often should all over ourselves for unnecessary reasons, the proper use of this phrase is I should have.3.When we are binnenseeking hausintern peace, we should use the phrase peace of mind. If we say piece of mind, we are letting someone know that we strongly disagree with them.4.You may accept someones invitation, except when you have a conflict.5. Irregardless is not a word Its regardless.6. Farther refers to physical distance, a nd further is used to describe the extent of an action or situation. I cant drive much farther, but There is nothing further to say about that. I often catch myself using further in both situations.7.A whole nother way of saying this phrase correctly is whole other way or another way.8.Sneak peak is not about looking at a mountain peaks. It means sneaking a quick look, andsneak peek is the correct phrase to use.9. Toward, afterward, and anyway do not have an s at the end. I think so many of us add the s that this is a habit thats hard to break.10.I thought I was a shoo-in for that position, not shoe-in. (Ive made this mistake numerous times)11.For all intensive purposes is really for all intents and purposes.12. Wet your appetite should be whet your appetite. Whet means to stimulate.13. Principal and principle. So many people mix these two words up. Principal is a person who is in leadership or is used to describe the importance of something. Principle refers to a standard, rule, or guiding belief.14. Affect and effect. It might make you feel better to know that fruchtwein people mix these two words up. The best way to distinguish the two is to remember affect as a verb and effect as a noun.15. Lay and Lie. OK. Admit it. How many times have you said you are going to lay down and take a nap? You should use lie instead which is defined as, to be, to stay or to assume rest in a horizontal position, so the subject is the one doing the lyingI lie down to sleep. But lay means to put or set something down, so if the subject is acting on an object, its lay. For example, I lay down the book. Got it?Some of these words and phrases are so commonly misused that its challenging to catch them ourselves, especially when we speak. In written form, its easier to see the grammatical errors so be careful with content for a presentation or report or on your website where your audience is much larger.--Bonnie Marcus, M.Ed, is an executive coach, author and keynote speaker focused on womens advancement in the workplace. What You Do Not Know About Resume Writing a Promotion Might Shock You

What You Do Not Know About Resume Writing a Promotion Might Shock You The Lost Secret of Resume Writing a Promotion If youre asking for a management role, you have to showcase your management abilities. Additionally, you might need to have medical research experience or marketing experience. When youre working on obtaining a promotion, it can take some effort to become noticed by management. When you make an application for an internal promotion, its better to pay attention to your contributions to the business. Keywords are typical words that everyone recognizes to mean something similar. Resumes are made to give people a concept of who you are and what you need to offer, not a complete accounting of every event youve done. An actual professional always accepts the advices and criticism to perform the work in the very best approach. If you regularly book work, developing a one-page resume is going to be a challenge. Before you even begin writing your resume, you want to get a comprehension of the sort of positions youre likely to be applying for, and the sort of skills and experience which will be required for that specific position. Learn about the three kinds of skills you may highlight and the way youre able to incorporate them into your resume. If youre short on experience and searching for an entry-level position, you may choose to highlight things like grades, awards, etc. You may often receive an excellent starter list right from the work advertisement. You might be thinking, Yeah, I already knew that, but what you might not know is that a resume written to submit an application for an internal position is somewhat different from the resume you would write if you were trying to find a work elsewhere. When each position differs, each position will require another set of bullet points. If you cant locate a minimum of 20 ideal jobs, then your ideal job presently doesnt can be seen in the jobs marketplace. If youre planning to have a b etter position inside your present company, its panzerschrank to suppose that you are asking for a new job in a new company rather than assuming that the executive team knows everything about your work. If you held other jobs between your stints at the exact same company, set them in between your two roles. As always, you will start to your present job first. Figure out about all the benefits you may take advantage for a worker and make certain youre growing financially and your work isnt only reflected in the monthly check. Do not assume that, because youre asking for an internal promotion, the individual reading your resume will be acquainted with your work. Then stack each work title and the dates you held the job below the name of the corporation. Youve seen your ideal job and you believe that youre the suitable rolle for it.

What to Do When Youre Ghosted By a Company or Recruiter

What to Do When Youre Ghosted By a Company or Recruiter Your interview went great The hiring manager really binnenseemed to like you and said they thought you would be a good fit. They told you that you would hear back within a few days, but fast forward a week and... crickets. So what happened? We hear a lot about recruiters and companies who get ghosted by candidates and new hires, but this also happens in reverse. Heres what to do when youre ghosted by a company or a recruiter. Follow Up.I often get asked when is the right time to follow up when you dont hear back about a job and honestly, it depends. You want to do it soon enough that you dont get forgotten but not so soon that youre seen as a pest. Here is when and how to follow up First, if you didnt write a thank you notenzeichen after your interview, send one out immediately. A good thank you note can make you stand out, is the perfect way to follow up, and forgetting one can result in a missed opportunity. A good thank you not e should be prompt, include information that you learned from the interview, and express your interest in moving forward to the next step. Want a gold star? Include something unique that will add value for them, like an initiative that you think could work for them or a relevant article. Already sent a thank you? Often, an interviewer will have every intention of getting right back to you, regardless of whether you get the job or not, and then work gets in the way. If you have already sent out a thank you email and the date they said they would get back to you has passed, follow up with them 2 - 5 days after that day has passed. If a company did not indicate when they would get back to you, follow up within 2 weeks.Reach out to them the same way that they originally reached out to you, so if they are a recruiter who sent you a message over LinkedIn, try them that way. You want to get people where you know they are the most active to increase the chance that they will follow up.Dont overthink the follow-up message. You are just indicating that you are still interested. If you have had other job offers you were considering, let them know that you received an offer but would like to see if you were still in the running since you are still very interested in working for them. Transparency is always best and letting them know that you have other rods in the fire will hopefully get them to move forward mora swiftly.Do not send out a second follow up notice after your initial one goes unresponsive. They may be busy, but so are you and you shouldnt have to keep pushing on anyone who makes you feel like you need them way more than they need you.Analyze What May Have Happened. If you have followed up and have still not heard back, its likely that you wont be hearing from them about the position. I know its less than professional and its not very fair of them, but there is a lesson in every rejection. Is the job posting still up? If not, its likely that they have already found a new hire or have enough qualified candidates to choose from. Seeing this may help you get a little more clarity as to what happened with that role. When you reflect back on your interview objectively, were there any areas that you think you struggled with? How would you handle that differently next time? What did you like the most about this opportunity? The least? Figuring that out may help you in your search for another role that is more aligned with what you need in this stage in your career. Move Forward.Maybe they hired someone else, or maybe they are no longer hiring for that position, but regardless, they have moved on, so its time for you to too. Youve done everything you could do. A friend once told me that sometimes disappointment can lead to an appointment with something better. So remember that this opportunity may have been nice, but it was certainly not the last. You have plenty to offer and can take your incredible skills elsewhere to a more responsive organiz ation. Quick note The company might get back to you weeks, or even months later. This, my friend, may be a red flag. They could have hired someone that didnt work out or have been so overwhelmed and disorganized that they have forgotten to touch back until now. Disorganization and a quick turnover may mean that this role is problematic. Move forward with them if youre still interested in the opportunity but be sure to ask questions and to feel confident that this is a job that you still want. It could also work in your favor to negotiate for a higher salary, especially after living in limbo for so long. Related Articles Around the Web What to do when recruiters and potential employers ghost you One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant adva ncements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot onl y is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction wo rkforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Should you ever keep your bosss secrets A lawyer weighs in

Should you ever keep your bosss secrets A lawyer weighs inShould you ever keep your bosss secrets A lawyer weighs inWhat do you do when someone you work for asks you to keep their secret? Attorney David C. Miller, Esq., from the firm of Bryant Miller Olive is a board-certified in Labor and Employment Law by The Florida Bar.Miller answered some tricky questions about keeping the secrets of others in the workplace.Use good judgmentWe all want others to feel they can trust us, said Miller and One parte of earning trust is keeping others confidences. This is as true at work as it is in life generally. The thing is though, if were going to be trustworthy, we have to have the good judgment to know when something should be kept secret and when it is harmful or wrong to do so.There are gradations to secrets you can or should keep. Miller said Its obvious that we should respect someones personal secrets most of the time. If your work friend confides that hes worried about his childs troubling behavior at home, most of the time its nobody elses business and it likely would hurt your friends feelings if you gossiped about it.On the other hand, if a coworker tells you that she thinks shes being sexually harassed but asks you elend to tell you may be doing her and others a disservice by not properly reporting it.When is a secret a secret? As a general proposition, merely being told someones secret doesnt by itself impose a duty of confidentiality. However, there are lots of situations where information is legally confidential, Miller said. A companys legally defined trade secrets cant be divulged. Some state laws make the names of victims of certain crimes confidential. Often the home addresses of public safety employees and others are confidential. Medical information is often protected from disclosure. In those cases, and others information is confidential and disclosing it can be improper. When in doubt Seek guidance from an appropriate person.More serious situationsIf s omeone confesses wrongdoing or says that hes planning something wrong, you should usually disclose it if you cant talk him into confessing or not going through with it, Miller said. As with most things, theres a spectrum. If you catch a coworking stealing a few pens from the storage cabinet, Miller said you might just express disapproval and not say anything the first time. But if you find the security guard asleep at her post, you probably need to report it.An absolute rule? Never agree to keep a secret that could harm someone or put you in a position of being (or even seeming) dishonest.Use your reputationIts easy to say you never have to keep a secret, but it can be very hard in practice, Miller said, You can feel tremendous pressure to keep secrets not to be a rat. This is where your reputation for integrity and honesty and trustworthiness go hand in hand and protect you.If youve made it clear through your actions over time that you will do the right thing, people will treat yo u accordingly. What happens if you change your mind?If you accept a secret and then, after consideration, decide you shouldnt have, Miller said you really need to follow your best judgment. It wont hurt your integrity not to keep wrongful information secret, even if you rashly promised to do so. But dont randomly start to spill the beans. If at all possible, you can try to tell the person first and explain why its wrong to keep the secret, Miller advised. And you never know You could be pleasantly surprised, and he will decide to disclose it himself. Even if he doesnt, you will have done everything you could to do the right thing. What if it blows up in some way?Are you legally culpable if you know a tiny bit of someones secret that turns out to be damaging in some way to the firm or an individual? Miller said it depends on the circumstances. What did you know? How much? When did you know it? How clear or unclear was your knowledge? Again, when in doubt, get guidance from someone you tr ust. Miller said, Itd tempting to declare Im always totally transparent, or I never betray anyones secrets. But absolutes, as good as they may sound, dont work in the real world.Be thoughtful. Be careful. Be honest. Be all that and, pretty soon, youll be the person everyone trusts.

Probably not.
